We understand the lure and the dangers of designer drugs at Lucida Treatment Center. This is the first step our clinicians must take in order to appropriately treat addiction to designer drugs. Designer drugs are in the substance abuse treatment programming at Lucida Treatment Center.

Designer drugs are drugs that are created or designed to have the same effects of illicit substances, while they are not classified as illegal. Some of these drugs are also made to be undetectable in substance abuse testing.

What Are The Dangers Of Designer Drugs?

Some common designer drugs include K2 and bath salts. Because they are always changing and manufacturers of designer drugs are always creating new substances, the list grows. The DEA is concerned about designer drugs because they are extremely dangerous and have caused many deaths. Conversely, the “designers” are not concerned with the dangers of designer drugs. They are concerned with how much money they can make. As a result, the types of chemicals used to create designer drugs can be lethal in and of themselves.

For example, K2 has been associated with many deaths and rendering victims catatonic. It is a designer drug that mimics marijuana. K2 is also called spice. K2 is comprised of dried plant material that looks like marijuana, and man-made chemicals. These man-made chemicals are not known because there is a myriad of “designers” creating them. As a result, the effects of this designer drug can be lethal.

Bath salts are another common designer drug. Typically, they have the ingredients of Methodrone and Methylone. These drugs can be addictive and users have complained of feeling extremely violent and physically confrontational after using bath salts. Bath salts are labeled “not for human consumption”, so they do not have to be regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Many designer drugs are so labeled in order to float above the radar of the Drug Enforcement Agency, as well as other government regulatory agencies.

According to the American Addiction Centers, the US Drug Enforcement Administration acknowledges seven different types of designer drugs. They are:

  • N-ring systems
  • Piperazines
  • Cannabinoids
  • Phencyclidines or arylcyclohexamines
  • Tryptamines
  • Pipradrols
  • Phenethylamines

Are The Dangers of Designer Drugs More Lethal Than Other Drugs?

The dangers of designer drugs are more lethal because they are more unknown. Many of their components are man-made chemicals that are as individualized as the designers themselves. For example, marijuana does not produce the same physical effects as its designer alternative, K2. Understanding the street names of some designer drugs is helpful. Your loved one may say they use; fake weed, plant food, or scooby snacks.
