No one heals from addiction alone. The importance of a solid support network — of strong self-help support groups — has long been recognized as one of the critical components of addiction recovery.

While at Lucida Treatment Center, clients have the option to participate in Alcoholics Anonymous or Smart Recovery through our addiction treatment programs in Lantana, Florida. We have several Smart Recovery-trained facilitators who hold meetings several nights a week. Clients who prefer to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are taken to groups held in the community.

These people are engaged in self help support groupsSmart Recovery’s 4-Point Program® helps people recover from all types of addictive behaviors. These include alcoholism, drug abuse, substance abuse, drug addiction, alcohol abuse, gambling addiction, cocaine addiction and addiction to other substances and activities.

The Smart Recovery 4-Point Program® teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance. It encourages individuals to recover and live satisfying lives. The program teaches tools and techniques necessary for self-directed change.

At Lucida, the Smart Recovery self-help support groups are educational and include open discussions. The program advocates the appropriate use of prescribed medications and psychological treatments. Smart Recovery promotes a scientific knowledge and approach to addiction recovery. Alcoholics Anonymous, on the other hand, takes more of a spiritual approach.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous is an international self-help support group that focuses solely on helping people recover from alcohol addiction.

There are no requirements to join AA. You only need to be ready to admit you have a drinking problem and do something about it.

Alcoholics Anonymous operates on the basis of a 12-Step Program. Many steps of the program consist of taking responsibility for your alcohol addiction. Two steps involve making a list of everyone whom you’ve hurt with your drinking problem and making amends with those people, as long as it doesn’t cause them further harm.

As noted above, AA self-help support groups tend to approach the journey to sobriety more spiritually than Smart Recovery. Nearly every step mentions God in some capacity.
